New harvest season brings new realities (and challenges)
As most of us are aware, the prices of many world commodities are on the rise. We see it at the gas pump. We see it at the grocery store. And while most of us think of barrels of crude oil, rice, and cooking oils when we think of rising commodities prices, this year those increases very much include coffee. The prices of green coffee beans are currently at a 14-year high, and as we continue to negotiate 2011 contracts with the farmer cooperatives with whom we partner, we are realizing prices that are well above $3 and some above $4 per pound for green coffee beans this harvest season. While higher prices paid to coffee farmers is what we strive for, we have had a number of uncomfortable conversations about how to deal with these price increases and what they will mean to you– our customers. As much as we desire to keep our price to you the same, we cannot. Beginning in April,
Café Campesino will raise its prices on the first set of coffees that will be under new contracts. In June, we will we bring the rest of our coffees to those same prices as those remaining contracts are settled. Stay tuned for more details in next month's newsletter. In the meantime, for more on the current situation and to read a coffee importer's perspective on the state of the market, check out this blog entry from Max Nicholas-Fulmer of Royal Coffee.
So what does the rising price of coffee mean to Fair Trade? Will the prices drop again? Why is the international price for coffee increasing? Over the balance of this year, we will be looking for answers to these and other questions and we invite you to join in our discussion. Please look for regularly updated content on our blog - www.fairtradewire.com
- as well as updates in this newsletter. And please let us hear your feedback. We want to know how these changes may affect you. You can contact us anytime at info@cafecampesino.com.
As always, thanks for your support of fair trade, organic, shade grown coffee via Cafe Campesino. We hope you enjoy this month's edition of Fair Grounds.

Customer Spotlight - My Coffee Shop at East Lake
Do you love our coffee and look for it on the East side of Atlanta- near Decatur, Oakhurst, East Lake, or Kirkwood? Well, look no more! My Coffee Shop at East Lake
opened last month at 2462 Memorial Drive, SE, in the East Lake community of Atlanta. The coffee shop is located near two golf courses- the East Lake Golf Club that hosts the Professional Golfers’ Association’s Tour Championship each year and the Charlie Yates Golf Course, a public golf course that offers golf education programs to children in the neighboring communities. Linda Buice, who also manages contract work at Atlanta’s Grady Hospital, decided to open the coffee shop to give the golfers, as well as members of the East Lake community, a place to gather to enjoy themselves. “I always wanted to open a coffee shop,” Linda said when she started the location. Linda managed the build-out and design of the space, which offers a place for everyone- people on-the-go, parents with kids and customers who want to hang out for hours. In addition to
Café Campesino coffee, My Coffee Shop also offers a selection of baked goods and fresh foods for breakfast and lunch. Learn more about My Coffee Shop at East Lake on Yelp where they have already garnered some great reviews! Good luck and congratulations, Linda!

Permata Gayo was founded in 2006 in the Bener Meriah district of the Aceh Province in Sumatra, Indonesia. Cooperative Coffees began importing coffee directly from Permata in 2009. With around 3000 members in the Permata cooperative, they exported approximately 3 million pounds of green coffee beans in 2010.

Fun Facts / Coffee Notes
Do you equate darker coffee with stronger (i.e. more caffeinated) coffee? Did you know that dark roasted coffees (we call ours French roasts) actually have LESS caffeine than the lighter roast styles (Medium, Full City, Viennese)? The longer a coffee bean is roasted, the more caffeine that burns off during the roasting process. So while a French roast coffee may taste stronger, it actually has less of a caffeine "kick" than its lighter roasted counterparts.

Quote of the Month - Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.
“The morning cup of coffee has an exhilaration about it which the cheering influence of the afternoon or evening cup of tea cannot be expected to reproduce.” ~ Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., from Over The Teacups (1891)
